As you must be aware, the Coronavirus outbreak which started from Wuhan city of China has now engulfed the entire country and has already killed thousands of people.
What’s equally shocking is that coronavirus has indirectly wrecked havoc in married life of many couples. It may sound strange, but Chinese government figures are pointing in this direction. As on 24th February 2020, more than 300 married couples have filed for divorce in China’s Sichuan province, where the dreaded virus has caused panic.
Reason behind Married Couples filing for Divorce in China:
As per a report by Chinese local media, owing to the threat of coronavirus, people are forced to stay in their house and have been advised to refrain from moving out for work or leisure activities. Due to this, married couples are spending more time with each other as compared to normal days when they are individually busy in their work.
It is believed that some couples have not been able to handle this change and are getting into heated arguments with each other on petty issues. This problem has escalated so high that many couples have filed for divorce.
The Way Ahead:
Now since the coronavirus outbreak has affected more than 60 countries of the world, the respective national governments have started issuing orders to shutdown educational institutions, public places and offices.
Government bodies as well as corporate owners are strongly insisting and encouraging ‘work from home’ options for their workforce as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
New Challenges:
From here on, it has to be observed whether divorce rate shoots up in other countries also which have imposed lockdowns similar to China. If there is no significant increase in divorce rate in other countries, cases from China can be dismissed as exceptional ones. Whereas if such trend of increasing divorce rate emerges in other countries as well, then it will raise serious question on the institution of marriage itself, which is based on the core principle of togetherness.
Thus it can be concluded that coronavirus has posed challenges not just for the medical professionals but also for sociologists and psychologists.
